Leeds made wholesale changes in almost every position. John Pemberton replaced Gary Kelly at Right Back, Kevin Sharp replaced Tony Dorigo at Left Back, Chris Fairclough replaced Carlton Palmer at Right Half, David O'Leary replaced David Wetherall at Centre Half, Noel Whelan came on for Phil Masinga at Left Half, in defence. While in the Forwards, David White replaced Gordon Strachan at Outside Right, Nigel Worthington replaced Centre Forward Brian Deane and Mark Tinkler took over from Gary McAllister at Inside Left. A Gareth Griffiths own goal in the fifteenth minute was enough to give United the lead at Half-Time. Lee Glover equalized for Port Vale in the sixty-fifth minute but United restored there lead courtesy of David White a minute later. They seemed to have the game won when Nigel Worthington increased their lead in the seventy-first minute, but the Valiants came back with a brace from Martin Foyle in the seventy-fourth and eighty-second minutes to salvage a draw. Mark Beeney, Mark Ford, Jamie Forrester and Andy Couzens were the unused Leeds substitutes. Paul Kerr, Tony Naylor, Peter Billing, Joe Allon and Arjen Van Heusden were the Port Vale substitutes. J. Rushton (Stoke-on-Trent) was the referee.
